Notes: First observed at Punta Norte in 1975 when he was a young adult male.  Mel is estimated to be 47-50 years old (in 2009).  He often beach hunts for sea lion pups and is currently (in 2009) the only adult male to do this.   Mel has been observed with open wounds on his jaws and distinctive white scaring when the wounds have healed.  He has a small notch in each of his tail flukes. Since 2006 Mel is usually found with the orca known as Sol (PTN-014).
